Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th April in 1972. Scott was raised an only daughter by her grandmother. Scott was a student at the Philadelphia High School for Girls when she was a senior, and then she enrolled in Temple University. She completed her secondary education the course of two years while also working. She wanted to be a high-school English teacher. This dream was however put on hold when after 3 years of studying and working as an aide to teachers, she was kicked out of university. Her career began with a performance artist who spoke words, performing her pieces live at poetry readings. Her next collaboration was to Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. The two wrote You Got Me together. At a Roots show, she revealed her artist status. After that, she secured collaborations with artists such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experiences on the stage, as she appeared in the Canada tour of Broadway the musical Rent. She was hired to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
